Mochacchino Butter Sugar Scrub Tutorial

Need an extra boost to wake you up in the morning? This Mochacchino sugar scrub should do the trick. I like to scent mine with a mix of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate fragrance, but the butter already has a delicious scent so you could really just eliminate the added fragrance.

Ingredients:
2 oz Mochacchino butter
2 oz sweet almond oil
1 cup Demerara sugar
1/8 cup ground coffee
25-30 drops of fragrance or essential oil

Procedure:
1. Weigh out the Mochacchino butter and melt in the microwave.
2. Weigh out the sweet almond oil and add it to the melted butter.
Melted butter and oil
3. Add the sugar and coffee grounds to the melted oils and stir.
4. Add fragrance to the mixture and stir.

Mixing up the sugar and oils
 5. Package it in a pretty container and then rush off to the shower for a nice scrub down!
Pretty and packaged
You may find that this needs more or less liquid oil depending on your taste. I would let the mixture cool to room temp and then modify it if needed.

Let me know if you try it and how it turns out!

Chocolate Coconut Sugar Scrub

I have been working on some sugar scrubs this week and I have made some that I think are unique. One of my favorites is the chocolate coconut sugar scrub. It is made from unrefined coconut oil (retains the lovely coconut scent), sweet almond oil, demerara sugar, and a bit of chocolate fragrance oil. This is such a yummy scent, it reminds me of a candy bar! I love that I was able to get half of the scent from the coconut oil. This helps to keep the product even more natural by eliminating some of the fragrance oil.

Getting the ingredients out.
I first measured out the oil and sugar. The coconut oil was then gently melted in the microwave.
Mixing the scrub
The sugar was added to the oils and mixed. Then the fragrance was added and mixed into the scrub.
In it's pretty little container
I packaged the scrub into cute 8 oz containers. No preservative is needed in this scrub as it does not have any water in it. Since the scrub will be used in the shower, you may want to scoop a bit out with a clean spoon instead of your fingers to keep out the water and any germs on your hands.
It looks delicious!
Since this is not an emulsified scrub, it will leave your skin smooth and moisturized. Scrub made from oil may leave your tub a little slippery, so you need to be cautious when getting out of the tub.

Christmas scented solid sugar scrubs

Solid sugar scrubs are all the rave right now. While I have made them in the past (see old post here), I thought I would try out some new molds I found at Marshall's.  These molds are larger than what I have used in the past and I did not cut them down into smaller pieces. When I go into the shower, I like to have a decent sized block of scrub that I can break a piece off of and then scrub away. These seem like the perfect size. They fit well in my hand and will last for quite a few showers. You can also find these molds at Amazon*.

Iced gingerbread, spiced orange, and sugared cranberries scented solid scrubs.

I followed the same recipe as in this post for the spiced orange and sugared cranberries solid scrubs, but I modified the recipe a bit for the iced gingerbread. I love to use some courser sugar in brown scrubs, so half of the sugar is demerara sugar and the other half is regular white sugar.

All nice and wrapped!

Cubes of sugary goodness...

I have a bunch of melt and pour soap that has been sitting in my soap lab for quite a while. I had grand plans to make some pretty detailed soap, but alas I much prefer to make cold-process soap.  So this soap has just been waiting for me to get some motivation and make something with it. Finally, today was the day! I was browsing some of the Soap Queen's old blog posts and came across the sugar scrub cube tutorial from Naiad soap arts.  Since I have a ton of fragrance oils that are not used in my soap line, but I just NEEDED to have, I put some of them to use.

The pink cubes are watermelon scented, the yellow is coconut lemongrass, and the green is succulent pear. Dylan came into my soap lab after I was done and wanted to eat them...they do smell and look pretty tasty!

These cubes are quite easy to make. For each color I simply melted 2 oz of clear melt and pour soap. I then added 2 oz of jojoba oil and mixed well. Next I added between 2-4 drops of liquid colorant and about 20 drops of fragrance. The final step is to add 6 oz of regular refined sugar and mix really well and then pour into a mold. I used the square silicone mold from Brambleberry and it worked great. For more detailed instructions check out the blog post I mentioned above.

Soap and scrub

Just whipped up a batch of pumpkin soap, using real pumpkin, and a batch of jasmine salt bars. I changed up the salts in the salt bars to a fine grain from the medium grain and I think they look better. I am also working on a double batch of oatmeal, milk, and honey soap to replenish my stock and for a custom order that wants an entire loaf.

I have also been playing around with my pumpkin cream soap that I made a while ago. I finally got it to the thickness that I like. I want to make some of the cream soap into a scrub, so I have been testing out different ingredients. I tried raw sugar, sea salt, luffa, and jojoba beads. The sugar turned out fantastic. I scented it with brown sugar FO and it is really to die for. The salt seemed to "melt" into the soap and turned it very thick--too difficult to use. The luffa and jojoba beads would probably be good for a facial scrub, but they just didn't do too much for me. I may try out some exfoliating waxes, apricot kernal, aluminum oxide, or synscrub spheres. I think I will stick with the sugar for the body and test out some of the other options for the facial scrub.

I will try to get some photos of the new soap up tomorrow.
Hope you all were able to enjoy the beautiful day!

Vanilla Cafe Sugar Scrub

This is a scrub a made about a month ago and never posted about. I absolutely love this scrub...scent, texture, everything...except what it does to my tub. I don't think I have ever seen a tub get so gross from one scrub session. I think it is the mixture of oils sticking to the tub and then the fact that the coffee grounds are really dark and stick to the oil. Anyone have a suggestion...something to add to the scrub to prevent the oils from sticking to the tub? Maybe something like dryflo or natursorb?

Mocha Café Sugar Scrub

I am really loving sugar scrubs. I made this one with some ground coffee, vanilla FO, and vanilla frappuccino FO. I think it looks and smells really good. I modified my recipe again so that I got back the layer of oil when the sugar settles. I have decided that I prefer the extra oil in the end product. It helps to spread the sugar and I like to have some oil left on my body after I shower so that I do not have to use lotion. I will probably be listing a container of this product soon on my Etsy site. I just need to make some labels, but I think I need to get some waterproof labels first.

Ginger Honey Sugar Scrub

I used up all of my last sugar scrub and decided to make a new one tonight. This one I increased the amount of sugar in an attempt to decrease the amount of oil that accumulates on top of the scrub when it sits. I also left out the cocoa powder that I used last time and I scented it with a honey ginger FO. It smells really great. I can't wait to try it out tomorrow. I have become totally addicted to these scrubs. I love the way they leave a slight trace of oil on your skin that acts like a lotion. My skin really looks and feels much softer in just 2 weeks. I think next time I will make a cranberry sugar scrub. I have a sparkling cranberry FO and some cranberry fruit fiber that I think would go great in a scrub. It would probably turn out pink so it would be super cute, too! I was also thinking of changing the cocoa butter to shea butter just to try out different combinations. Here is a picture I took of the scrub.

Goals for tomorrow

Okay so I have a lot planned for tomorrow. I want to try out a recipe for natural deodorant that I saw on craftster.org posted by Spa Therapy Works. I have been waiting to get the deodorant containers that I needed and I received them on Thursday so I am ready to give it a try. I also want to make another sugar scrub since I am totally addicted to them now. I was thinking of doing a ginger scent. Maybe I can grate in some fresh ginger as well. I will have to see if I have a ginger FO in my work area. If I have time and all the ingredients I think I will also try a bath bomb, but I am not sure that I have any good bath bomb molds. I also plan to go to the pottery studio for studio hours and finish trimming some pieces and maybe throw some more pots. I just got my first pots back last weekend. The glazes look really nice but the pots show that I am clearly a beginner. I will post some pictures soon so you all can have a good laugh. I also need to run to the post office and I am kinda in the mood to do some shopping. I was thinking new jeans would be nice. What are you all doing this weekend?

Chocolate Truffle Sugar Scrub Tutorial

I made a wonderful scrub last weekend using the recipe below that was posted on the natural beauty workshop blog. I added a brown sugar fragrance oil instead of what the recipe recommends. This scrub is to die for. I made it on Saturday and it is just about used up. I think I will need to make more this weekend. I will probably modify the recipe a bit so there is not as much separation between the oils and sugar. I think I will either increase the sugar amount or decrease the amount of oils. I have some bad red marks on my body from eczema and this scrub has done wonders for them in a week. I found it best to shower and then scrub my body with this and then just quickly rinse off the sugar to leave behind the oils on my skin. It was really nice and I had no need for lotion. Plus the oils don't seem to make my pants too tight like lotion does. ;)
Scrub a dub dub

The Chocolate Truffle Sugar Scrub
This scrub makes about two 4 ounce jars.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup Demerara Sugar
2 ounces Hazelnut Oil
1 ounce Castor Oil
1/2 ounce Cocoa Butter
1/2 teaspoon Cocoa Powder (unsweetened)
1 teaspoon Vitamin E (T-50)
1/4 teaspoon Grapefruit Seed Extract

Directions
Gently melt the Cocoa Butter in a double boiler or in very short bursts in the microwave. Be careful not to overheat your butter. Meanwhile, pour the Demerara Sugar into a mixing bowl. Stir in Hazelnut Oil, Castor Oil, Vitamin E, and Grapefruit Seed Extract. Add Cocoa Powder and mix well. Now add you final ingredient, the melted Cocoa Butter. Stir the mixture well to make sure that the butter is distributed evenly.

Fragrance
This scrub will have a slight natural aroma of Cocoa Butter while you are preparing it. However, this aroma will dissipate once the mixture has cooled. If you prefer a scented scrub you may add a 1 teaspoon of synthetic Fragrance Oil such as Dark Chocolate Supreme or Raspberry Truffles. Another option is to add several drops of Bourbon Vanilla Absolute or Vanilla Oleoresin. Although they are not chocolate, these natural Vanilla aromas would compliment this scrub nicely.

The recipe in the post was taken from http://www.naturalbeautyworkshop.com.

Vanilla Chai tea, Patchouli, and Lavender soap

I made 3 new soaps yesterday: Vanilla Chai tea, Patchouli, and Lavender soap. They are looking so nice. I will be taking them out of their molds tonight. I changed the shape of the lavender soap to a large circle tub and plan to cut the soap in pie type slices. The other two were molded in my wooden rectangle molds. The patchouli and lavender soap have shea butter in them. Oh and I also put a pinch of silk fibers in all three. I have read that they help to make soap super smooth and silky. I don't want to wait 3 weeks to try them out :(

I can't wait to get my supplies this week so that I can try out making lip balm, lotion, scrubs, and deodorant. I have made lip balm in the past but I am excited to give it a try again.
